Running a successful clinical practice is one of the most satisfying ways to earn a living in a world that usually follows the “9-5 routine”. In fact, it is one of the PRIMARY reasons why most youth choose a professional field as their line of work. After all, FREEDOM OF TIME and BEING YOUR OWN BOSS are perks that every working soul on earth inherently desires when it comes to choosing a job for life. Luckily, DENTISTRY offers both! Hence, it is natural to expect a practising dentist to be pretty satisfied with his/hers QUALITY OF LIFE especially when you compare it to the life of the people with regular jobs where STRESS and TIME-CRUNCH take centre-stage.

Here’s what the IDEAL day is expected to look like for any earning, practicing Dentist with at least a few months of experience;

6 A.M – 8 A.M
Focus on activities related to PHYSICAL and MENTAL well-being (Exercise/meditation/sports etc)
10 A.M – 2 P.M
Focus on activities related to CAREER and FINANCES (Clinic)
3 P.M – 5 P.M
Focus on activities related to PERSONAL HOBBIES (Passion)
6 P.M – 9 P.M
Focus on activities related to CAREER and FINANCES (Clinic)
Post 9 P.M
Focus on activities related to MENTAL well –being (Family and Friends)

However, any earning, practicing Dentist with at least a few months of experience will also agree that a NORMAL day in reality turns out to be something like this;

8 A.M
Struggle to get out of bed since you slept in late last night (Binge watching series, social media, you tube etc)
10 A.M – 2 P.M
Attend to patients and spend the free time between appointments either surfing the web or browsing through newsfeed and sharing those group messages on whatsapp
3 P.M – 5 P.M
Lunch and that ever dear afternoon nap
6 P.M – 9 P.M
Clinic, patients, recover rent, profits and more social media
Post 9 P.M
Dinner with family, You tube, whatsapp, Netflix, Prime video, Newshour, politics etc

While many may argue that as long as they can pay the rent and support their family it doesn’t really matter how they spend their time during the day, there is no hiding from the fact that getting used to aimlessly wandering through your days eventually leads to the development of a MINDSET that is NEGATIVE to say the least towards your career and lifestyle.

The ability to run a successful clinical practice is an art that one HAS to master. Similarly, improving the state of your MENTAL and PHYSICAL well-being too needs some practice! In fact, one may also go to the extent of saying that in order to master your JOB, you need to master the right MINDSET first! That is exactly where SCHEDULING comes into play.

While it may come across as quite boring to have a pre-determined routine chalked out for each day, not having a goal and living a life that involves working for the sake of working is in fact the pinnacle of MONOTONY and BOREDOM.

The question then arises, how exactly is SCHEDULING the answer to personal and professional growth?

Read on!

#1 - It helps you START YOUR DAY RIGHT

Be it physical exercise, a sport you enjoy or just a walk in the park as the sun rises, incorporating an early start to your daily schedule gives you perspective about the day ahead and life in general and above all...makes you feel good and fresh.

Bottom line, SCHEDULING your mornings will set you up for a POSITIVE mindset.

#2 – It helps you END YOUR DAY RIGHT

When SCHEDULING your mornings becomes a routine, SCHEDULING your nights becomes equally important. A right start is just as important as a right finish to a marathon day. Whether it is spending time with loved ones than on social media, reading a book than staring at your phone or hanging out in the balcony looking at the stars...SCHEDULING your bedtime helps you feel satisfied, accomplished and in general keeps you in a pleasant state of mind and helps you sleep better.

Bottom line, SCHEDULING your nights will set you up for a POSITIVE morning.

#3 – It helps you TRACK YOUR DAY RIGHT

Looking for courses on new techniques, reading about new advances in your field, updating your knowledge and devoting time to learn soft skills...everything is possible with the INTERNET today. Making the right use of your time in between appointments instead of scrolling through a newsfeed is what SCHEDULING your work day implies!

Bottom line, SCHEDULING your working hours will help you TRACK your day and growth on a periodic basis thus making you and your practice MORE EFFECTIVE!

#4 – It helps you CONNECT WITH YOURSELF AND YOUR LOVED ONES

Since you now have a SCHEDULE to start, carry on with and end the day right, you will start seeing POCKETS of free time distributed throughout the day that you can utilise for pursuing hobbies you let rot over the years, connect with your loved ones at home, maintain friendships and social engagements and overall reduce any STRESS you may be facing otherwise!

Bottom line, SCHEDULING your FREE TIME will enable you to have a better relationship with yourself and the world around you thus making you a better, happy and satisfied person.

While the IDEAL SCHEDULE may be different for every individual since there is no one-size fits all approach here, none of the above will be possible without A PLAN OF ACTION.

To conclude, PROFESSIONAL and MONETARY success is highly dependent on PERSONAL well-being and that includes physical, mental and emotional well-being.

SCHEDULING YOUR DAY to incorporate all is KEY to the IDEAL BALANCED LIFE.

HUMAN TOUCH DENTISTRY: The often overlooked detail budding dentists should be focusing on when dealing with patients

This blog is the intellectual property of the blog owner and unauthorised reproduction of the blog material is strictly prohibited. One of the most important points to keep in mind when you’re incorporating the “marketing” approach in your practice is that a patient before he/she undergoes the “ACTUAL” TREATMENT on your chair has already been UNDER YOUR TREATMENT the moment he/she walked into your clinic. What do I mean by this? Well, there are really TWO types of TREATMENT that a patient undergoes at your clinic! For the sake of simplicity, let us just call it PHASE I and PHASE II TREATMENTS. Most of us, especially when starting out tend to be too focussed on the PHASE II TREATMENT or the ACTUAL TREATMENT on the chair, doing our best and working hard to achieve the BEST result possible for the patient and rightly so...that is what we are ...
